Hello, and thanks for visiting. I’m Dan Eldridge, a cultural reporter and travel journalist living in Philadelphia. (I also write frequently about business and entrepreneurship, as well as commercial real estate and development.)
Formerly the Pittsburgh City Paper‘s music editor, I’ve also worked as the Philadelphia Weekly‘s copy editor, and as the development news editor at Flying Kite, an online news magazine that documents the growth of the new economy in the Greater Philadelphia area. (Flying Kite is published by the Detroit-based Issue Media Group.)
I’m the author of both editions of Moon Pittsburgh (Avalon Travel); the guide’s first edition was nominated for Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Award. I’m also the co-author of four Lonely Planet guidebooks (to Turkey, Southeast Asia, the Philippines and New England), and as a freelancer I’ve written for the New York Times, Forbes Travel, Daily Telegraph (UK), Houston Chronicle, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Next American City, Paste, Tango, Made Man, BBC.com, and many, many others. To purchase any of the travel guidebooks I’ve written or contributed to, visit my Amazon Author Page.
I was also the founding editor of Young Pioneers, a magazine about independent travel culture that was nominated for an Independent Press Award by the Utne Reader. I’m currently in the process of relaunching Young Pioneers as a magazine about unusually creative entrepreneurs. To get a feel for the sort of entrepreneurs and small businesses we’ll be documenting, visit The Labor Party, our creative entrepreneurship blog.
As a public speaker, I’ve given presentations about journalism and self-employment at the Andy Warhol Museum, Barnes & Noble, and The Waffle Shop. I’ve been interviewed on WPXI-TV (NBC) and KDKA-TV (CBS) in Pittsburgh, and on radio programs including CJSR‘s Radio Outpost; The Curtis Sliwa Show on News Talk Radio WABC; and World Have Your Say on the BBC World Service.
I’m currently the acting Philadelphia Chapter President of Ed2010, a New York-based networking group for magazine editors. And although I keep forgetting to renew my memberships, for years I was a member in good standing of the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA), as well as the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).
I’m also a proud graduate of the Transitions Online (TOL) Foreign Correspondent Training Course in Prague, where I studied with reporters from the Christian Science Monitor, the Washington Post, The Economist, and the BBC. And in 2004, I had the extreme privilege of being invited to attend the Book Passage Travel Writers & Photographers Conference in Corte Madera, Ca., where the working faculty members include dozens of legendary travel journalists, editors and authors.
As a freelance commercial writer/copywriter, I’ve tackled an extensive range of projects. To name just a few:
- I’ve edited and updated numerous reports on cities both domestic and international for a leading corporate communications company in the travel, meetings and hospitality industry.
- I’ve written a program guide to one of the country’s finest music and arts festivals for a nonprofit events producer.
- I’ve created untold amounts of Web content and blog posts.
